CSMRI Site Environmental Conditions Implementation Report 11-28-2011 Fact Sheet and Update December 2011 NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF LOWER TERRACE AREA SOILS
REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION AND FEASIBILITY STUDY, PROPOSED PLAN, PUBLIC MEETING,
AND PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD REGARDING THE CSMRI SITE, GOLDEN, COLORADO NOTE: COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 9, 2011 The State of Colorado acting by and through the Board
of Trustees of Colorado School of Mines completed a remedial investigation and
feasibility study (RIFS) of the lower terrace area soils at the CSMRI Site,
located at the west end of 12th Street in Golden, Colorado.
The State is also proposing a remedial plan to dispose of contaminated
soils at an off-site disposal facility.
Copies of the RIFS and the proposed remedial plan are available at the
following website
http://csmis12.mines.edu/ehs/csmri/csmri2007.htm.
The RIFS and proposed plan may also be reviewed at the Site information
repository located at the Colorado School of Mines Arthur Lakes Library
Circulation Desk, 1410 Illinois Street, Golden, Colorado (303-273-3022). The RIFS evaluates the nature and extent of impacted
soils at the CSMRI Site lower terrace as a result of prior mining research
activities. Approximately 1,400
cubic yards of soil are impacted.
The RIFS concludes that taking no further action is not appropriate to protect
health and the environment. The
RIFS reviews other alternative remedial actions and concludes that off-site
disposal of all of the impacted soils is the preferred remedy.
Other alternative remedies considered in the RIFS include capping the
site, on-site consolidation and solidification, and partial off-site disposal
and on-site consolidation and capping.
The proposed plan selects off-site disposal of all the affected soil
because it best meets the criteria for remedial actions.
Ground water will be considered separately in a future RIFS. Public comments on the RIFS and the proposed plan are
due on December 9, 2011.
Written comments should be submitted to Mr. Linn Havelick, Colorado
School of Mines, 1500 Illinois Street, Golden, CO 80401
