Facilities MASTER PLAN

Colorado School of Mines

Introduction

Introduction

Introduction

The Facilities Master Plan defines the University’s physical needs associated with its strategic direction. It is a comprehensive and dynamic plan that provides the framework necessary to guide campus physical development. As the plan is implemented, it will allow the Campus to improve aesthetics, meet required space needs, plan for facility upgrades and improve site conditions. It is important to understand the master plan as a process and not a document. As a process, the University can better assure proper planning by continuously reviewing, challenging, and updating the plan to meet needs as they change. The plan is based upon numerous variables, needs and programmatic issues. It reflects who and what we are and where we need to go. It is not as dependent on time as it is the variables and program needs that drive it.

The Colorado School of Mines Facilities Master Plan is broken into two elements. The first is the data portion of the plan, which is referred to as the Reference Information. The second is the design component, or "The Plan". Each are driven by, and are the direct result of the programmatic direction and mission of the Institution.

Strategic Plan

The University embarked on a major strategic effort to align its mission and vision with its operating strategies. This effort included giving direction and establishing program direction for this facilities master plan.

The Strategic Plan and its process identified seven strategies to pursue over the next decade. These are as follows:

Each strategy has associated Goals and Actions that are outlined in the Master Plan Reference Information. Each has a direct impact on the physical environment and are driving factors in the development of this plan.

Programmatic information and data used for the master plan are driven by the strategic direction of the campus. Although the Facilities Master Plan is part of the overall University planning process, it is responsive to, and follows direction from, the strategic planning process. The Facilities Master Plan defines the physical environment necessary to meet the strategic objectives of the University.

Reference Information

The driving force of the master plan is the Reference Information. This is documented under separate cover. It summarizes the programmatic data that the campus plans are built upon. It includes the data and assumptions that identifies the University's facilities needs.

The Reference Information is reviewed bi-annually through the University's Academic Planning Process. This ensures the Facilities Master Plan operates as working documents, continually reflecting the University's needs at any given point in time.
